It is most likely a red bed lay up process between over lapping mahogany planking if it is a large vessel. The planks are most likely held in place with screws to the ribs through drilled and plugged bungs of mahogany. Look for small round plugs in the planking they should be spaced out by the ribs of the vessel from the flat keel up or keel if its a sail boat. An outer section of the planking can be removed by removing the plugs and the screws holding the plank in place. Be careful as often the screws of an older wooden vessel are bronze flat head screws and strip easily. Save all the screws if they are bronze as they can not be replaced and are unavailable. Red bedding marine compound is available. I hope this helps .
